Dom Cunningham wins two at bronze medals at the Melbourne World Cup
Dominick Cunningham produced world class tumbling and vault work to pick up bronze medals on consecutive days at the Gymnastics World Cup in Melbourne.
With the event part of the World Cup Series that gives gymnasts the opportunity to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo on individual apparatus, Dom won bronze medals on both floor and vault.
Also competing for GB was Courtney Tulloch who missed out on the vault final, but did qualify for the rings final, finishing in a very respectable 5th place in a high-quality field.
With the top eight from qualifying making it through to finals, Dom made it safely through on floor in 6th place with a score of 14.066. In the final, the top four were separated by just 0.100, with Dom impressing with 14.500 for bronze.
He then qualified for the vault final in 2nd with 14.583, and in a tense final he stuck both landings dead for 14.749 which was good enough for a second bronze medal.
Dom said: "It was my first competition of the year and it was a big one. I came out for floor and vault and the pressure was immense, but I knew what I had to do.
"I qualified for two out of two finals, then I was part of one of the toughest finals I’ve ever been in. The scores were insane! But this is what sport is so I went for it and came out with 3rd place on floor and vault.
"Thank you for everyone’s messages and support. It doesn’t go unnoticed."
In rings qualifying, Courtney finished 4th, making the final with a score of 14.700 before showing his consistency on that piece in the final, scoring 14.600 for 5th.
The next event of the individual apparatus World Cup series takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan from the 15th-17th March.
